Woodcarving exhibition is a hit with visitors
Date published: 19 March 2011
The Lancashire and Cheshire Woodcarvers put on an exhibition of their work at Spotland Methodist Church today (Saturday 19 March 2011).
Hundreds of different pieces of work carved from wood were on display. Demonstrations of different woodcarving styles also took place.
Wood carvings of animals, people, clocks, and vases were on display and many people flooded through the doors to see what was on offer.
The group meets at the Church and show their work at various shows throughout the year. Today is the first time they have used the church for an exhibition.
John Adamson from the group, said: “There is more space here and we can do a lot of things.
“I am very surprised at the turn out, we had this fear that there would only be us here – we are very happy with the turn out especially so early on a Saturday morning.”
Mr Adamson said that wood carving is a relaxing hobby for the members of the group.
He said: “You are always challenging yourself and learning from your last piece. You can lose yourself for a couple of hours and then feel mentally refreshed.”
The group has been meeting at the church for between five and six years, and Mr Adamson said they are building up great relationships.
“It can be a lonely hobby so it is nice to have a community around you.”
Amongst the visitors was the Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Zulfiqar Ali, he said: “It is really fascinating to see the carvings.
“I’m amazed.
“They are all making the best use of their spare time.
“Credit must go to the Lancashire and Cheshire Woodcarvers for organising this and brining their technique to the local community and thanks to the Church community for giving them this opportunity.
“It shows what can be done in spare time.”
