Councillor’s push for safety on Ashworth Road

Date published: 15 March 2011

A Norden Councillor is continuing to push for road improvements to be made to Ashworth Road.

Councillor Ann Metcalfe recently raised concerns over the state of the road, describing it as “hazardous.”

Councillor Metcalfe said the condition of the road is worsening and she will continue to pursue funding for the repair work to be carried out.

She said: "Following the recent discovery of the imminent collapse of the roadway into the brook several metres below, a metal barrier has now been erected.

“Also warning signs indicating road narrowing and advisory slow signs have also been put in place to alert the public to the issue.”

Councillor Metcalfe added: "My worry is that this is happening in several places along the whole length of the road. Lower down near Gelder Clough the road is gradually slipping into the mill lodges.

"It is obvious that for many years the necessary repairs and maintenance to Ashworth Road have been overlooked.

“I know Rochdale MBC is strapped for cash but I will of course continue to pursue funding and repairs for the safety of the many residents and users of this road."

A spokesperson for the Impact Partnership who manages the highways on behalf of Rochdale Borough Council said "The embankment has been weakend due to sub-soil water. In order to keep traffic away from the weakened edge, a temporary 'build-out' and barrier has been constructed into the road. We have also placed temporary signs and rerouted the white lines.

“A feasibility study is currently being developed to review options for a more permanent solution."
