Community take part in village clean up

Volunteers from Milnrow joined with Councillors today (Saturday 12 March 2011) to clean up a grot spot in the centre of the village.

Members of the community, armed with litter pickers and bin liners, turned out in full force to tidy up the area behind the Pennine Precinct.

Teenagers from the village were just as keen to get involved as the adults at making the land look better.

The aim of the day was to make the area, adjacent to Stone Street, look inviting and tidy away the rubbish which has been left by youths using the wooded area to socialise or rubbish which has been fly tipped.

Milnrow and Newhey Councillors, Keith Swift, Andy Kelly and Irene Davidson instigated the clean up and were pleased by the community’s response in getting involved.

Councillor Davidson said: “The aim is to make the place look tidier and to show people that we care.

“This is the centre of the village and it is the first thing visitors see – we want to make sure it is kept tidy.”

Councillor Swift said: “We have got a good turnout of young people alongside the three ward councillors.”

He added: “We always try to promote keeping both Milnrow and Newhey tidy – there is no excuse to leave the rubbish here. Everyone has got recycling bins, they should take their rubbish away and dispose of it, recycle it.”

Councillor Kelly said he thought the day was going “great” he explained that it was an offshoot from the Milnrow and Newhey Forum which has seen the creation of the Milnrow and Newhey Conservation and Heritage Group.

“It is not just a clean up,” said Councillor Kelly, “It is about having a nicer, greener place to live, it is getting younger people involved too.”
