To celebrate World Book Night Drake Street barbers SMART gave away copies of Alan Bennett’s autobiography “A Life Like Other People’s” to customers.
World Book Night took place yesterday (Saturday 5 March 2011) and is a partnership between the BBC and the publishing industry. Over one million books were set to be given away free across the country by over 48,000 “givers”.
It is hoped that those who receive the books will read them and then pass them on to others to share the reading experience.
World Book Night volunteer, John Heyworth, said: “As an avid reader I registered with the World Book Night organisation to be a book giver. The guidance issued to givers was that the books should be handed out in places where you wouldn’t normally think of receiving one. That’s why I approached SMART Barbers, after all if you go for a haircut you hardly expect to leave with a book.”
SMART’s Proprietor, Grant Donovan, said of the event: “I am delighted to take part in the event. As a fan of Alan Bennett myself, I am particularly pleased to be able to share his work with my customers.”
