Concern over 'hazardous condition' of road

A Norden Councillor is urging drivers who use Ashworth Road to travel with care because of the hazardous condition of the road.

Councillor Ann Metcalfe is concerned about the condition of the road and said it has been “worsening” year upon year.

Parts of the roadway have been washed away because of the heavy rainfall over the years.

Councillor Metcalfe said: “There is so much water which flows down from the surrounding hilly landscape it has gradually washed away what little infrastructure there was and in several areas the road is beginning to disappear.”

Speaking about the action taken, Councillor Metcalfe said: “At this particular stretch we have erected a barrier which I hope will alert drivers to the hazardous condition of the road, the problem being the road is disappearing in other places as well.”

Councillor Metcalfe continued: “As a priority I will continue to ask for funding to improve what has obviously become a highly dangerous route for drivers, cyclists and riders.”

Councillor Metcalfe concluded with the following message: “We will now have to wait for a report and a cost to repair the damaged carriageway. Please drive with care.”
