Rochdale woman prepares for role in charity play

Date published: 02 March 2011

A Rochdale woman is preparing to perform in a groundbreaking play as part of a global effort to stop violence against women and girls.

Wendy Stringer will team up with the likes of Strictly Come Dancing star, Jill Halfpenny, for a performance of Eve Ensler’s play, The Vagina Monologues.

Following the play there will be a high profile debate, chaired by BBC News Presenter Ranvir Singh, about the violence and exploitation of women including issues around trafficking, abuse, rape, slavery and early sexualisation of our young girls.

The event, organised by women’s charity, The Birdhouse Fund, hopes to raise money and support for women across Greater Manchester and also mark the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day.

Ms Stringer who works for a charity supporting vulnerable women, said: “Violence against women is something I have always felt strongly about and an area I have worked in for several years.

“The experience has been truly amazing and I've learnt that regardless of race, class, age or religion women share a deep love for one another and together we can achieve anything.”

Jane Kenyon, of The Birdhouse Fund added: “We’re delighted to be part of the 100th year anniversary celebrations. This is our chance to speak out and highlight the issues women are facing in Greater Manchester today.

“We’re hoping that through this event, local women will come out and help us celebrate the empowerment of women and raise funds for those that need some help.

“It may be that they’re stuck in an abusive relationship or simply lost their job and need a helping hand. That’s what the Birdhouse is about.”
