Half-term fun at community centre

Date published: 28 February 2011

Wardleworth Community Centre hosted two days of fun during half term. The aim of the event was to engage young people during the holidays in positive activities such as sports and team building games.

This event was an extension to an existing regular activity, “The Chill out Zone” where youngsters visit centre every Friday afternoon after school for indoor games such as table tennis, basketball, football and air hockey.

The Centre’s Development Worker, Abdus Salam, Admin Officer, Afzal Miah and Youth Worker, Mohammed Basith all engaged in the activities and encouraged the youngsters to suggest and help organise events and activities to enable them to gain a sense of ownership and build their confidence.

“They are the architects of tomorrow and will be carrying the torch to light the way for the youths of tomorrow,” said Abdus Salam.

Around 50 young people attended and took part in the varying activities.

The ball games like dodge ball and hoops were popular with the older boys and the younger children were happy playing video games in the games corner.

Wardleworth Community Centre hosts many youth related activities and welcomes any new suggestions. “We may not have the means to do everything that is suggested, but we certainly can explore and deliver a few.” Mr Salam added.
