Police appeal following arson attack

Date published: 22 February 2011

Police are appealing for witnesses following an arson attack at a block of flats in Heywood.

Officers were called to the building on St James Street, Heywood just after 10.00pm on Friday 18 February 2011.

The offenders got inside the property via an insecure doorway and made their way onto the landing where they set the area alight, causing a fire and smoke to spread throughout the building.

No one was hurt but a young child and two adults were treated for smoke inhalation.

Detective Constable Ben Harris from Rochdale CID said: “This was an unprovoked and cowardly attack which could have ended in tragedy had the occupants not realised the building was on fire.

“Unfortunately we do not have descriptions of those responsible for this crime and I would urge anyone who may have seen something suspicious to contact police.”

Anyone with information should phone police on 0161 856 8754 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
