This year shoppers will see the UK’s first and only Easter egg to mention Jesus on the box in their supermarkets.
The ‘Real Easter Egg’ is a Fairtrade charity chocolate egg and will make its way to supermarket shelves following a successful church backed campaign.
A trial listing of the Easter egg will be sold in Morrison’s, Co-op, Waitrose and Booths.
The Priest in charge at St Thomas’ Church, Newhey, Graham Lindley, described the Real Easter Egg as “a really good initiative.”
He said: “For me it importantly 'ticks the box for Jesus' but other benefits include supporting Fairtrade products and there is also some donation to charities.
“I will certainly be using a couple of these eggs as visual aids for my Easter morning sermon and at the end of the service we will crack them open and enjoy eating them!”
The Rt Revd, Nigel McCulloch, Bishop of Manchester, said: “It is great news that for the first time people will have the chance of buying an Easter egg from a shop that explains the significance of the festival on the box.
“Through the charitable donation and its Fairtrade chocolate the egg brings to light the Easter themes of hope and new life.
“I believe there will be widespread support for the product from the faith community with many others likely to be interested.”
