Redwood School

Date published: 07 February 2011

You may recall that just before Christmas we found out that we had been recognised for our continuing work on anti bullying projects and particularly for the production of a book written and produced by some of our student council members. We will formally present the award at a special assembly on Thursday 17 February at 10.00am in the Gracie Field Theatre. Parents /Carers are welcome to attend.

Independent Travel - We wish to take this opportunity to highlight the excellent work which is co-ordinated by Lynda Reddish and Dawn Alletson and has resulted in a large number of students now traveling independently. This is a fantastic achievement and gives those students involved the opportunity to access a number of opportunities. The students are also giving power point presentations to other schools within the authority, on how students with learning difficulties can overcome the issues relating to independent travel. Well done Lynda and Dawn.

Redwood School and Rochdale FC - we have strong links with Rochdale FC and on the afternoon of February 17 some players will be presenting students with their awards following the recent ‘Penalty Prize’ fundraising scheme.

Bridging Year Students ’Driving Forward’ - A group of students from the Bridging year have been given an amazing opportunity to learn to drive. They attend MANTRA Training Centre half a day each week, working with tutors on the Theory and Hazard Awareness Tests. As part of this tuition each student also receives a 30 minute individual driving lesson. It is a fantastic opportunity for students, good fun and is part of their Foundation Learning Accreditation. Update from the students next week.

Key Stage 3 News— The Lilac room have been making brussel sprout soup as part of the revolting rhymes story. 8/9 Orange had a shopping trip to Asda to buy fruit as part of healthy eating. With Valentines Day just around the corner the sensory room had been set with a Valentine theme.

Students of the week: Jason C, Sheraz H, Habib

Sixth form news - Ben, Craig, Riaz, Farjana, Liam and Aisha in sensory interaction have been easing into things with a little exercise and dance. They have been doing the Salsa and bhangra, to get the limbs moving and the hips swaying. Also the group have been tickling their taste buds and awakening their senses by peeling, chopping and assembling a juicy fruit salad. Not surprising then, that there were smiles all round. Well done to you all. Well done to Michael Whiteside and Ryan D who have been working really hard on their Independent travel. They have received certificates for travelling to and from home/school and work experience.

Adele’s Performing Arts group 4, 5 and 6 have explored the seaside, been under the sea, been on a pirate adventure and had a beach party. Groups 1, 2 and 3 get ready for the fun to begin next week.
