Man dies following tragic accident

A Rochdale man has died after falling down an embankment in Norden.

The 42-year-old man fell close to the Hutchinson Road play area, off Blackpitts Road, Norden, on Saturday (29 January 2011) and hit his head on a rock.

He was taken to Rochdale Infirmary where he died a short time afterwards.

Police were called to the scene just after 4.00pm.

Rochdale Online understands the man, whose name has not been disclosed, was playing with two children at the play area.

Councillor Ann Metcalfe, described the accident as “tragic” she said: “My sympathy and thoughts are with his family at this time.

“I do not wish to apportion any blame but I do hope we can make sure this area is fenced off so it doesn’t happen again.”

A spokesperson for the Police said there were no suspicious circumstances and it looked like a man had fallen.

A file will now be sent to the coroner’s office.
