New design developments celebrated

Buildings from across the borough were celebrated this evening (Tuesday 1 February 2011) at the Rochdale Borough Design Awards.
The awards, now in their second year, are part of a bid to reward top quality design in new developments.
This evening the awards were presented to the winners by the Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Zulfiqar Ali and David Ward from sponsors Wilson Bowden.
The winners are:
- Rochdale Borough Design Award – The Rochdale Sixth Form College (Seven Architecture).
- Rochdale Borough People’s Design Award – Bib Knowl Farm, Littleborough (TFS Design).
- Special Commendation Award – Birtle Brook Village – (CJ Partnership).
This year there was a shortlist of seven nominated developments, covering a variety of types of new development, from public buildings to private homes, all of them recently completed.
Mayor Ali said developments such as these create “local pride” and are also helping to "improve the image of the borough."
David Gore from TFS Design who designed Bib Knowl Farm, in Littleborough said it was “great” to win the award, he added: “It shows that people are interested and they are expressing their opinion.”
Simon Parker of Seven Architecture added: “We are delighted to be part of this process. The Sixth Form is a fantastic investment for Rochdale.”
Paul Clark of CJ Partnerships who designed Birtle Brook Village, said: “It is great to get some recognition – it’s my job so it’s nice to be recognised.”
Peter Rowlinson, Service Director for Planning and Regulation at Rochdale Borough Council said the awards were given to “worthy winners” he added: “I am pleased to be trying to create a sense of pride in the borough.”
