Police have launched a murder investigation in Rochdale.

At about 11.30pm last night (Sunday 30 January 2011), police were called by hostel workers at the Salvation Army on High Street, who had found a man unconscious with head injuries outside.

Officers attended and the 67-year-old man was taken to hospital. He died at about 5.30am.

A 41-year-old man was arrested by officers near the scene on suspicion of murder, and remains in police custody for questioning.

Detective Chief Inspector Pete Jackson said: "We are in the very early stages of our investigation and are still looking into what, if anything, motivated this attack.

"A man has been killed and our thoughts are with this family at this difficult time.

"Detectives are working on the investigation to piece together exactly what happened and if anyone does have information I would ask them to contact us on 0161 872 5050 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111."
