United Utilities is urging householders to be on the lookout for 'sneaky leaks' following the cold weather.
The freezing conditions have caused ground movement, putting pressure on underground pipe joints and causing bursts or small leaks.
The water company is asking people who have an outside water meter to check whether there is any hidden leakage seeping away from their pipework.
Gary Dixon, United Utilities customer services director, explained: "Sometimes leaks can be very sneaky and the water escapes away underground without ever coming to the surface.
"If over the last few weeks you have noticed that your water pressure isn't very good, that can also be a telltale sign.
"If you have a water meter outside in the drive or the pavement there's a very simple check you can do to help spot the problem. As well as saving water it could help to avoid a bigger water bill than normal."
The company is advising running the following check:
- First make sure all taps and water-using appliances are switched off
- Make a note of your external meter reading
- Wait for an hour then check the meter reading again.
- It should not have changed - if it has increased it is very likely that you have a leak on your external supply pipe.
- Call the United Utilities Leakline on 0800 330033 and contact a plumber.
United Utilities may be able to help with any large water bills that result from the leak, and is responsible for all pipework up to the property boundary and the customer is responsible for all pipework after that.
Customers may be eligible for an allowance on large bills if they can show that they took action to repair leaking pipework.
