A reminder to parents and carers of Year 9 students that parents' evening will take place in school on Thursday evening. Your child should be in the process of making appointments to see their teachers. Please note that the deadline for returning options forms has been moved from Friday 4th February to Monday 7 February.

Congratulations to 9A and 10E for achieving 100% attendance for week commencing 10 January 2011. Well done to 7D, 8A and 11E for achieving 99%.

We would like to congratulate our Year 9 and Year 11 basketball teams who defeated Saddleworth High School, who are the champions of Oldham, last week. The Year 9 team, who won by 45 points to 29, consisted of Ayub Majid, Usman Mohammed, Michael Moore, Lee Mcniffe, Liam Hagan, Tom Smeeton (from Year 8) and Ben Ratu. The Year 11 team won by 34 points to 24 - representing the team were Matthew Miles (from Year 10), Josh Marsden, Sam Clayton, James Taylor, Connor Pickup, Scott Mcniffe, Mathew Green and Dominic Welsby. Both teams played outstanding basketball and were fantastic ambassadors to the school.

This year's Apprentice competition is now underway. The task for round one involved contestants taking £10 belonging to a Year 7 form group and using it to raise funds for this coming summer's trip to Burrs Country park. Students could raise money any way that they wished, but needed to engage members of the Year 7 form in the task. The winning team raised over £200 for their form group. Twenty students entered round one but five were sacked at boardroom meeting!

Year 9 students were treated to a Science careers fair last week. There were stalls from lots of employers and training agencies to raise awareness of the wide range of careers and progression routes available to students that involve Science or that qualifications in Science can lead to. This event was timed to coincide with Year 9 options to help students decide which Science pathway to choose, and was also attended by students from Holy Family and Falinge Park High School.

Last Friday Year 9 students participated in Jason King’s World War 1 Workshop. Students learned in an interactive and hands on way about what life would have been like for soldiers and civilians and also had the opportunity to dress up and have rifle training. The event was a huge success and students showed common sense, care, courtesy and curiosity as well as being impeccably behaved - they were an absolute credit to the school. One quote from a Year 9 student was “The day was really good - Mr. King was friendly and the things we looked at were really interesting.” Another added “I enjoyed it as we got involved and it wasn’t like a boring museum, we could touch the artifacts.”
