Road safety improved in Greater Manchester
Date published: 25 January 2011
Safety on Greater Manchester's roads has improved dramatically, figures for 2010 show.
Greater Manchester Police's figures for road traffic collisions show far fewer people died or were injured on the roads last year compared with 2009.
The number of fatal collisions reduced by 26.5 per cent, those resulting in serious injury were reduced by 3.5 per cent and minor collisions are down by 20.5 per cent.
Assistant Chief Constable Neil Wain said: "It is very satisfying to see safety on our roads improve because we have worked hard with other agencies such as councils and the Highways Agency to improve conditions and give motorists as much information as possible to make their journeys trouble free and enjoyable.
"Officers from Greater Manchester Police also do as much as possible to crack down on those driving illegally.
"It is extremely important that this work continues and figures keep on falling because every death and injury on the roads is incredibly traumatic for the people involved and their families."
