Danczuk considers action over 'unfair' leaflet

Date published: 20 January 2011

Rochdale MP, Simon Danczuk, has hit out at a Liberal Democrat leaflet that places him against disgraced former MPs, the BBC reports.

The Labour MP is pictured under the heading, "Guilty?” next to Phil Woolas and David Chaytor.

Next to the image of Mr Danczuk is information about his expense claims, including an 80p claim for a journey to Rochdale’s Mayor making ceremony.

Mr Danczuk told the BBC he was "very disappointed" and would take legal advice.

The party is investigating.

Mr Danczuk said he was angry with the "inappropriate" recent Lib Dem leaflet.

Rochdale Online was unable to contact Mr Danczuk at the time of publication, however, he told the BBC:

"I'm very disappointed that the Liberal Democrats are putting out leaflets that have no basis in truth in a desperate attempt to try and win elections in May," said Mr Danczuk.

"We've just been through a by-election in Oldham East and Saddleworth that was caused by the fact that inappropriate leaflets had been produced.

"The Liberal Democrats in Rochdale are actually doing the same thing."

Rochdale Lib Dem councillor Keith Swift, who wrote the leaflet, said the complaint is under investigation and therefore he was unable to comment.

However, speaking to the BBC last night, Councillor Swift, said: "I don't think claiming 80p expenses to go somewhere which is in walking distance really is a new beginning or setting a good example.”
