A man has been jailed for three years for attempting to smuggle drugs into Buckley Hall prison.
23-year-old Kamran Zafar of Highbarn Close, Rochdale, was found guilty of possession with intent to supply a class C drug following a trial at Manchester Crown Court Crown Square.
He was sentenced to three years in prison yesterday (Wednesday 19 January 2011).
On 22 April 2009, Zafar's car was searched as part of a joint investigation between GMP and HM Prison Service.
Eight subutext tablets with an estimated street value of £400 were found in the door panel of the car he was driving, a Volkswagen Passat.
Detective Inspector Melani Linton, said: "Zafar was arrested as part of a proactive investigation targeting people suspected of bringing prohibited items into the prison.
"His sentence should act as a stern warning that not only do we take matters such as this extremely seriously but if you are found to be smuggling drugs into prison you face several years behind bars."
