Focus on Heywood: Favourite things
Date published: 24 October 2010
Throughout October Rochdale Online has been focusing on Heywood. Features have included the Heywood BMX Club, the Rotary Club of Heywood, Heywood Model Railway Group and there’s still more to come.
Today (Sunday 24 October 2010) Rochdale Online reporter Laura Wild visited Queen’s Park in Heywood to find out what the people who visit the park consider to be their favourite part of the town.
Linda Grey moved to Heywood seven years ago, she said: “I love the park, I come here every Sunday. Another favourite place in Heywood is the market; even though it’s only small it has a nice community feel. It nice to go for a cup of tea and meet friends and have a chat.”
Janice Pickup was visiting the park from neighbouring Bamford. She said: “My favourite part of Heywood is the park, the gardeners do such a good job and they have kept it nice. It’s a pleasure to walk round here on a lovely day or a wintery day.”
Bill Ward said: “I have lived in Heywood all my life and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. When I was growing up everyone lived in two bed terraces no matter how many children they had, now it’s changed and it’s bigger. Things have improved.
“I like all of Heywood but I particularly enjoy sitting in the memorial gardens or walking up to the park and sitting here.”
Chan Mudd was visiting the park with her one-year-old son Thomas, she said: “I like all of Heywood. It is nice to come to the park when I have time.”
John Turner from Bamford was in the park with his grandsons, Sam and Jack, he said: “The park is great. I come here with the grandchildren at least twice a week. It is all really good. The grandchildren love it.”
Maureen Jones said: “Sitting in the park on a day like today is lovely, I feel like I could be anywhere, I also have a fondness for the people in Heywood.”
Jackie Murray from Norden said: “I don’t come to Heywood much but I think the park is great. It has improved loads.”
