Hidden abuse - don't suffer in silence
Date published: 13 June 2006
Vulnerable older people who may be less able to protect themselves are being offered support and advice this week.
Marking an International Day to raise awareness of elder abuse, Rochdale Council, together with the police, NHS and other agencies are aiming to tackle the issue.
Thursday 15 June is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, an attempt to inform people about the problem, and to let people know where help and support can be found. To mark the occasion, people are asked to wear something purple on the day to mark the event.
Last year there were 178 referrals in Rochdale borough where allegations of elder abuse were made. However it is believed that the full extent of such abuse is much greater, and this is just the 'tip of an iceberg'.
Some adults are less able to protect themselves than others, whether as a result of age, illness or disability. This can make them vulnerable to abuse, and sadly, it may be people close to them who are responsible.
Abuse can be the result of a single act or may continue over years. Abuse may take the form of domestic violence, and may be physical or sexual, may involve people taking money without permission or not looking after someone properly. Such abuse causes misery, suffering and even death.
But help is available. If you suspect that elder abuse is happening, through something you have seen or heard, or something that you may have been told, you can share your concerns.
Pamela Lloyd-Hughes, Rochdale Council's Co-ordinator for the Protection of Vulnerable Adults said: "Elder abuse is often hidden from view. It may happen within families, but also to people living in institutional care, or in day care. If you think it might be happening, speak out."
Pamela added: "We recognize that in some circumstances the abuser may need help themselves, in caring, for instance, for an older relative."
