Heywood and Middleton MP slams Metrolink disability scooter ban

Heywood and Middleton MP Jim Dobbin has signed a motion against a decision by Metrolink to ban people in mobility scooters from using the tram system.
The motion, led by Bury South MP Ivan Lewis claims that the move discriminates against disabled people.
Until the recent introduction of new yellow trams, disability scooter users had been able to board the Metrolink.
“I think that in the 21st century it’s time that access was available to all disabled people. There should be an effort to design the vehicles for all people,” said MP Dobbin.
“The motion is to put pressure on them to at least think about it. It’s unreasonable not to cater for the disabled.”
MP Dobbin also revealed that there were similar problems with provision of disability access across the borough:
“It’s the same in the Middleton Arena. There should be wheelchair access. Hoisting disabled people into the water is not dignified.”
