Mayor Making Ceremony 2006 - Councillor Jean Hornby is the new Mayor

Date published: 18 May 2006

A packed Town Hall of invited guests, including former mayors, watched as Councillor Jean Hornby proudly donned the mayoral robes and chain of office as she was elected the Mayor of the Borough of Rochdale for the ensuing year.

Councillor Brian Davies formally welcomed the new mayor to quot;this great office" and paid tribute to the kind, caring nature of Cllr Hornby and her honesty and integrity.

Councillors' Jane Gartside and Irene Davidson gave speeches of support. Cllr Gartside said: quot;Jean has always worked hard for Rochdale and the town will be proud of her." Cllr Davidson said: quot;Well done Jean, you can now join a wonderful club of ex-mayors."

Having made her declaration of office, Cllr Hornby signed the declaration and the mayoral chains were removed from last years Mayor, Ashley Dearnley, and placed on Cllr Hornby.

In a moving speech, Cllr Hornby said: quot;I am proud to be the Mayor of the Borough, and I am concious that I am an ambassador for all four townships, Heywood, Littleborough, Middleton and Rochdale."

Councillor Hornby's family turned out in numbers and she thanked them profusely for their support, particuarly her husband Barrie, who was elected Mayors Consort. She also paid tribute to outgoing Mayor, Ashley Dearnley, whom she said had been a splendid mayor and also sent her best wishes to outgoing Mayoress, Beryl Wright, who had been unable to attend due to suffering a very minor stroke.

Mayor Hornby ended her speech by acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead, but explained they are challenges she is prepared to meet and promised: quot;I will do my best to do a good job."

Councillor Peter Evans was elected Deputy Mayor and Mrs Helen Evans Deputy Mayoress.
