Countdown starts for the new Recycling and Refuse service

Date published: 18 May 2006

With just two weeks to go before the new alternate weekly collection service starts for all residents who currently receive a Friday collection, Rochdale Council are currently delivering the new green and blue wheelie bins and bags.

To date over 10,000 new wheelie bins have been delivered and residents have been sent three different information leaflets during the last six weeks. There have been road-shows outside community centres and supermarkets and special ‘hit teams’ have gone to meet residents on the doorstep to discuss their concerns.

Dennis Pennill, Waste Services Manager said:

"It has been really reassuring how positive residents are about the new service. People are keen to recycle and the new alternate weekly collection gives them the chance to recycle both plastic and cardboard as well as glass, cans and paper."

Cllr. Wera Hobhouse accompanied the delivery teams in Littleborough and Wardle and added:

"There are two main issues with residents: The first is space. A number of households cannot fit two large, (240 litre) bins onto their property. In these cases we can offer the smaller 140 litre wheelie bin. Or if they don’t want a wheelie bin for recycling at all we advise them where the local bring sites are. The Council is trying to be as flexible and accommodating as possible.
The second issue is hygiene and smell and we recommend that residents take extra care in sealing their domestic waste before putting it into the ordinary residual waste bin.

"If the new recycling scheme in Pennines Township is a success we will introduce it across the whole of Rochdale Borough. In the long term it will save the Council millions of pounds that could then be invested in improving local services and help to keep the Council tax low."
