Nurse stabbed by 15-year-old at Birch Hill

At approximately 10pm on Sunday 2 July 2006, police in Rochdale received a report that a woman had been stabbed at Birch Hill Hospital, on Union Road, Littleborough.

The woman, a 54-year-old grandmother who is believed to live in the Spotland area, is a member of nursing staff at the hospital and suffered a stab wound to her side.

The attack is alleged to have taken place as the woman was getting out of her car. She is thought to have been on her way home about 9.40pm but returned to collect something.

The woman was initially treated for her injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening, at Birch Hill Hospital.

She is currently being treated at Rochdale Infirmary and is described as being in a stable condition.

Enquiries are continuing into the incident. Anyone who witnessed any part of it, is asked to contact CID at Rochdale on 0161 856 4897

A 15-year-old boy from Rochdale has been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding and remains in police custody.

UPDATE - 4 JULY

Police have obtained a warrant of further detention to continue questioning a 15-year-old boy.

Officers obtained the warrant of further detention at Rochdale Magistrates Court this morning, Tuesday 4 July 2006.

UPDATE - 5 JULY

Police investigating an incident where a nurse was stabbed at Birch Hill Hospital in Rochdale have bailed a 15-year-old boy.
