Heywood subjected to widespread areas of flooding

Date published: 03 July 2006

Heywood has yet again been subjected to widespread areas of flooding after a short but heavy downfall of rain early Sunday evening (2 July).

West Heywood Councillor Jacqui Beswick is determined that questions are asked of United Utilities regarding inadequate drainage provision for the areas that are repeatedly flooded.

The same areas, Pilsworth Road, Millers Brook Close, Ribble Drive, Atholl Drive, and the Walton Street area of Hopwood, were flooded two years ago with residents forced out of their homes for periods of up to three months whilst repairs were carried out to make their homes habitable again.

Cllr Beswick ensured that the Council Emergency Officer, who was on site at Pilsworth Road, was made aware of the other areas affected and that these would be included in the necessary environmental clean up at the earliest possible opportunity.

Heywood North councillor, Brian Davies, said: "When are the poor residents of these streets going to find peace?

"United Utilities who generate huge profits say these floods occur every 30 years. When did they say that? Less than two years ago. Well here we go again! What I wonder is their comment and forecast to be this time? When are they going to do something about their sewerage system that plainly does not work?

"The houses which are now known to be at constant flood risk will become increasingly difficult and expensive to insure and may prove impossible to sell. Will United Utilities compensate them for this?

"My suggestion to them is to offer to buy these properties from those willing to sell at normal market value, after all if there is a minimal risk as United Utilities suggest then let them enjoy these assets.

"The people of Heywood want action not words. When are they going to see it?"
