Councillor Dale Mulgrew and Liz Thirsk inspect a gully in their area
The Liberal Democrats have announced that every road gully in the borough is to be cleaned over the next 12 months. The proposal is part of the Lib Dems additional investment ideas and will cost £120,000. The necessary work will be carried out during 2008/2009.
Balderstone and Kirkholt Councillor Liz Thirsk said: “I have dealt with many complaints from local residents about the state of our gullies from environmental issues to flooding problems. This work is vital for our borough and I am glad that my Lib Dem colleagues have backed this idea”
Her ward colleague Councillor Dale Mulgrew said: “The poor condition of our gullies has been highlighted by the recent rainfall that we have had. People across our borough have been hard hit by blocked gullies, which then cause devastating floods. This is essential work that needs to be carried out and I think that the residents of our area will really see the difference.”
Council Leader Alan Taylor said: “From Heywood to Hamer, Wardle to Wardleworth and Milnrow to Middleton people tell us one of our priorities should be protection from flooding. That is why we are now committing to this enormous project. This extra investment will see a real difference and is the start of our proactive campaign to improve resident’s lives!”
