Sue Ridgard - Woman of the Year 2010
Date published: 21 April 2010
Sue Ridgard was named Woman of the Year 2010 at Rochdale Town Hall today, the culmination of an afternoon of food, wine and entertainment at the Women of Rochdale Luncheon.
For the last 18 years of her 40 year nursing career, Sue was Sister on the Coronary Care Unit at Birch Hill Hospital. Following her retirement, she continued her involvement in heart care with Rochdale Heartbeat, a charitable organisation sustained and administered by former heart patients to provide support to other local coronary patients and their families.
A former Assistant Secretary, Secretary and Treasurer of the Charity, Sue has devoted much of her spare time to the day-to-day running of the organisation, which is now in a much stronger position than before her tenure. Due to her enthusiasm and drive, Rochdale Heartbeat has been able to purchase new lifesaving medical equipment and has provided funding for cardiology staff to attend Advanced Life Support courses study days and conferences.
A recipient herself of heart bypass surgery, Sue’s commitment is not all about the money, as she also recognises the need for psychological support for patients and their families and makes herself available by arranging visits or by being on the end of the phone seven days a week.
