Travellers in Bowlee Community Park
Date published: 13 April 2010
Travellers have again took up residence in Bowlee Community Park despite Council efforts to restrict access to Bowlee from Heywood Old Road.
Residents living close to the entrance to Bowlee Community Park are angry that other points of entry have been left unsecured.
One resident said: "Bowlee Community Park is subject to the problems that manifests themselves when areas are subjected to the arrival of 'travellers/gypsies'.
"Great effort was made to restrict access to Bowlee from Heywood Old Road; it could be regarded as negligence that the same attention was not made at Assumption Avenue."
A spokeswoman for Rochdale Borough Council said: "The council will investigate travellers on its land. We understand the travellers have moved on from the site over the weekend. There are legal and welfare checks which the council must perform before it can apply to the courts and commence eviction proceedings which can take several days, even in the most straightforward of cases. However, we have not received a request to investigate this one further as it has now been resolved."
