Coast to Coast ride for Rochdale fundraisers

Date published: 07 April 2010

Paul McGrath, Michael McGrath, Thaddaeus Varey, Rick Fraine, Daniel Allen and John Slater are undertaking a charity bike ride in May 2010 for Pancreatic Cancer UK. They have chosen to do the Coast to Coast cycle challenge on 1 May 2010 which is a 147 mile cycle route from Whitehaven to Whitley Bay in just 2 days.

The Challenge is usually done in 3-4 days, but they have chosen to do it in 2 days, which is effectively around 75 miles per day. The route is best ridden from West to East to take advantage of the prevailing winds (supposedly!) from the West as well as having the gradients in your favour, i.e. short uphills and long downhills! The route is extremely varied and has large parts off road and on road.

Paul says they are raising money for Pancreatic Cancer UK following a close family member of Daniel being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in late 2008, and after fighting the disease for a year sadly passed away Christmas Eve 2009.

They have currently raised over £1000.00 but their aim is to raise £3000.00 and they have just been granted a licence to collect donations in Manchester City Centre a week after they return from the challenge.

They are also hoping to have a charity night with a silent auction for sporting memorabilia, in the near future.

Pancreatic Cancer UK provides help for those with the disease, and provides funding for research into prevention and cure. The charity only receives 1% of Cancer Research UK funding so it is important for individuals to raise awareness of the cancer, and to raise as much money as possible to help towards stopping this cancer from affecting other families.
