Former Mayor will be 'missed by everyone'

Date published: 04 April 2010

A former Mayor of Rochdale and Spotland councillor who passed away last week, will be "missed by everyone", says his former colleagues.

Rodney Stott devoted his life to public services, from work as an ambulance crew member to his many years involved with local politics.

In 1999 Mr Stott was recognised with an MBE for his services to the community of Rochdale.

For most of his political life he was a Liberal Democrat councillor. However, in 2008 he defected to the Conservative party with his wife Anne.

The leader of the Conservative party in Rochdale, Councillor Ashley Dearnley, said: “Rodney was kind and considerate to everyone he met and he was an excellent example to all of us.

“Rodney also had a great sense of humour and was a well liked character by everyone who knew him.”

Councillor Stott was the Mayor of Rochdale for the 1995-1996 period. Councillor Dearnley described him as the most successful Mayor who raised more money than anyone before him or after him.

“Rodney has given me some very sound advice over the last few years and I have very much respected him.

“He will be missed by everybody,” added Councillor Dearnley.

Paul Rowen MP, worked with Mr Stott over many years, he said: “It has been a pleasure to have worked with Rodney over the last 35 years.

“He contributed so much to our town through fundraising, the Rotary and of course the council.

Mr Rowen echoed Councillor Dearnley's sentiments when he said: “I know many people will miss Rodney, especially his sense of humour.”

The leader of the Labour party, Councillor Colin Lambert, said: "Rodney was always ready to help all constituents and often cut across party lines to achieve the best outcome for the borough and the individual.

"He worked hard for the borough and he will be missed. He came from the old school of politics and his family can be proud of his achievements."

The leader of the Liberal Democrats, Councillor Irene Davidson, was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.
