St Anne’s Academy gets a green award

St Anne’s Academy has been awarded a BREEAM* award, the environmental assessment method for buildings around the world. The school, which aims to be a benchmark for future academy buildings, has achieved the rating of ‘very good’ by incorporating the following into the design of their new school.

  • Providing 10% renewable energy 
  • Installing a biomass wood pellet boiler for a proportion of the heating and hot water 
  • Cutting C02 emissions by 25% 
  • Using lighting with an automatic presence detection and daylight dimming

St Anne’s Academy, Middleton, is part of the Building Schools for the Future programme. The £17.6m scheme to remodel the school will enhance the schools specialist facilities of technology, art and the built environment.

John Bollington, Building Schools for the Future Manager at Rochdale Borough Council said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the academy and recognises not only their green credentials but also the innovation in creating a truly 21st century school.”

Eric Jackson, Principal at St Anne’s Academy said: "It’s great to know that as well as getting a state of the art school we are also leading the way in showing how to make the best use of the world's reducing natural resources.”

In addition to the awarding of the BREEAM certificate, pupils from the Academy have been presented with new netball and football kits, sponsored by contractors Willmott Dixon.
