Independence Day of Bangladesh marked by Rochdale’s Bangladeshis

The 39th independence day of Bangladesh was marked as local Bangladeshis joined special guest Mr Amir Ali, Chairman of Daulatpur Union, Sylhet, Bangladesh, the Mayor of Rochdale Cllr Keith Swift, Paul Rowen MP, Jim Dobbin MP, councillors and community members to raise the Bangladesh Flag outside Rochdale Town Hall.

A reception with the Mayor at the Town Hall followed.

Mohammed Dobir Miah, the secretary of Rochdale Bangladeshi Partnership Project said: “My heart goes out to all the people who have sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our beloved motherland that we know today as Bangladesh, I pray for the departed souls – may they rest in peace.

"I hope that Bangladeshi’s living in the UK are able to learn and understand their identity and more importantly practice it.

"I am also hoping that the wider community will also learn and understand the rich culture we have.

"The RBPP hope to exchange and foster mutual understanding between British Bangladeshis and indeed other communities.

"We were privileged to be joined by the Chairman of Daulatpur union; we thank Mr Amir Ali for taking the time out to visit us in Rochdale."
