Lib Dems intimidate Independent candidate

Date published: 25 March 2010

Two weeks ago a news article was posted on the website of the Independent candidate in Castleton, Frank Salt, objecting to Councillors Peter Davison, Ted Flynn and Pat Flynn, Liberal Democrat councillors in Castleton, supporting the Lib Dem party from their civic allowances, that is, paid for by your council tax.

Last week Frank Salt received legal threats from the Liberal Democrats alleging the article was "libellous" and warning him to remove the article.

There followed a series of emails between the Lib Dems and Mr Salt and his agent before the Lib Dems finally backed off.

Mr Salt condemned the intimidation saying: "I expected standing as an Independent against a Liberal Democrat councillor would mean I came in for criticism from the Lib Dems, I even expected tactics which I feel sure most would condemn, but I didn't expect this type of intimidation, and so early, even before the election has been called, and I certainly didn't expect the Lib Dems would act like playground bullies and attempt to prevent me from revealing the truth about how you, the council tax payers, are funding the Lib Dem party locally."
