Knifepoint robbery in Heywood

Date published: 23 March 2010

A security guard was robbed at knifepoint outside a supermarket in Heywood.

The G4S guard was leaving the Morrison's store on Dawson Street at about 6.25pm on 20 March 2010 when he was confronted by a man who demanded cash.

The man turned around to see the thief brandishing what is described as a 'Rambo-style' knife with a 30cm blade.

He then grabbed a cash box out of the guard's hand containing a substantial amount of money and fled to a silver-coloured Vauxhall Astra before driving off at speed.

The thief is described as white, about 5ft 8in-5ft 10in tall, of stocky build, with a big nose and with shaved hair. He was wearing a grey hooded top.

Police are now appealing to anyone who has information about the robbery to come forward.

Detective Constable Ryan Grumbridge, of Rochdale CID, said: "Anyone who is prepared to carry such a weapon and use it to intimidate a security guard clearly needs to be taken off our streets and I want to assure people we are doing everything we can to find him.

"I would appeal to anyone who witnessed what happened, or who has information, to come forward.

"I particularly want to hear from anyone who saw a silver Vauxhall Astra being driven at speed or erratically in the area at about the time of the robbery."

Anyone with information is asked to call Rochdale CID on 0161 856 8754 or the independent charity, Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
