Funding for bus service

Date published: 17 March 2010

Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority (GMITA) has stepped in to help passengers and the local community following the withdrawal of a commercial bus service.

GMITA has agreed to fund the 445 service, which will run between Rochdale and Shawfield Estate, including Ellis Fold via Spotland Road and Edenfield Road, from Monday 19 April for a trial period of 12 months.

Bus operator Rossendale withdrew their commercial bus service from 1 November 2009, which has left Shawfield unserved.

Councillor David White, Chair of the GMITA Bus Network and GMPTE Services Committee, said: “While we are not always able to step in following the withdrawal of a commercial bus service, in this case we have decided to help keep the 445 going, as we are aware of the strength of feeling within the Norden community.

“Around 80 per cent of the bus network in Greater Manchester is run commercially by private operators and when an operator withdraws a service, it is up to us to see whether there is a case for using taxpayers’ money to provide a service where there is sufficient need.

“We have a responsibility to taxpayers to ensure we get best value for money and, after examining the various options, we have agreed to commit the resources for a reduced 445 service.

“We will be reviewing the decision in 12 months and, in the meantime, would encourage people to make use of the 445 to ensure it continues to help people get around the local community.”

GMITA has limited funds, through the taxpayer, to help provide essential bus services that are not provided commercially. In this case, Rossendale will continue to operate this service with funding from GMITA.

The 445 service will operate from Rochdale Bus Station every hour, Monday to Friday from 9.03am to 2.03pm.

Passengers can check their services before travelling by calling Traveline on 0871 200 22 33. Lines are open from 7am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 8pm at weekends.
