More concerned about their sperm quality than having a career
Date published: 16 March 2010
Men in the borough consider their sperm count to be more important to them than being successful at work, according to new research released today. From the areas researched, work success was the only area less important with everything else taking precedent, including appearance and driving a nice car.
The study has delved into the psyches of men in the Rochdale region to reveal what’s at the forefront of men’s minds and the results reveal some interesting insights:
The Male Mind Revealed:
- Settling down with a partner (number 1 ranking for 36% of men in the borough)
- Driving a nice car
- My appearance
- Owning a property
- Being good at sport
- Having a healthy bank balance
- Popularity with women
- Good sperm quality/sperm count
- Being successful at work
Whilst one in seven men surveyed (14%) cited ability to have a family/sperm quality as their number one priority in life, a shocking 100% of men underestimate the number of couples that require fertility treatment in the UK. The reality is that 1 in 6 couples UK wide struggle to conceive and need your help. For some couples treatment with sperm donated by others is their only hope of achieving a pregnancy and ultimately a family.
The pilot of a new sperm donor recruitment campaign launches in Manchester today asking ‘Have you got the balls?’ to encourage men to step forward and consider sperm donation.
The National Gamete Donation Trust (NGDT) needs to reach a minimum target of 500 donors this year to help couples in need and the research reveals that men in Rochdale are a generous bunch. The NGDT is calling upon them to be part of an amazing group that will solve a national problem:
- Over a third of men in the borough surveyed (39%) said that now they’re aware of the need they’d definitely be willing to donate sperm to help other couples, which compares to one in ten men (11%) nationally
- An additional one in five (21%) said they’d possibly donate after further consideration, compared with 24% nationally
- When asked how they would feel if they found out they had donor quality sperm, a quarter of men in the borough said they would be proud (25%), and one in five (14%) would want to help others by donating their sperm
Laura Witjens, Chair of the National Gamete Donation Trust, says: “As our research shows, men view their sperm count and ability to have children as crucially important in life, and the new campaign we’re launching today, called ‘Have You Got the Balls?’ aims to get men in the borough of Rochdale thinking about sperm donation. In the UK there are hundreds of couples who need a sperm donor to help them conceive the child they long for so much, either because of infertility or genetic disease. These couples rely on men stepping forward as sperm donors.”
