The Mayor has cancer

Date published: 16 March 2010

The Mayor of Rochdale has announced that he has prostate cancer.

Councillor Keith Swift said: “I am receiving treatment for prostate cancer as a day care patient at the Christie Hospital.

"Thankfully the cancer is still at an early stage when it is most treatable.

"This diagnosis is a challenge that I am determined to face and overcome.

"I also want to encourage people to get, as I have, the excellent care and early detection now available.

"My treatment has started and I am feeling good.

"I expect to make a full recovery, but have decided to make this announcement in case I need to miss any engagements for treatment. I will be carrying on with my duties where possible, and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support, for which I am truly grateful.”

The cancer was caught during a routine check up.

The NHS advise regular self-checks, and recommend people look out for any abnormal signs. Contact your GP if you have any concerns.
