Springhill High School

Year 9 Play in a Day Aim Higher Event took place on Friday 26 February. Thirty Year 9 students worked with an actor for the day to discuss ideas around careers and to produce a play which they performed to a group of Year 8 and 9 students in the hall.

There will be a Parents Evening for Year 8 students on Wednesday 10 March between 6pm and 8.30pm. Students should have already made appointments with their subject teachers.

Recently we hosted the finals of the Year 11 Rochdale Schools Basketball competition which was a great event. The four schools taking part were Springhill, Matthew Moss, St Cuthberts and Oulder Hill. It was a good competition and the winning team came from Oulder Hill who played some fantastic basketball with Springhill coming runners up. Well done to all.

On the last day of term roses, hearts and balloons were sold together with a raffle to celebrate Valentines Day. The event was a great success and the £135 raised was donated to the Tony Phillips Fund for Technical Perfection. Many thanks to the helpers and the buyers, this was a lovely way to end to the half term.

Still on the Valentine theme, thank you for the big response to the Valentine Poetry Competition there were many entries especially from Year 11 students the results are:

  • Year 8 -Tawana Dingembira 8G

Our Year 8 Basketball team played in the qualifying rounds of the Rochdale Schools Basketball Tournament held recently at Falinge Park High School. After two close games against Falinge and Beech House, Springhill came out on top winning both games and will now play in the finals.

Year 8 students Connor Cain, Sirat Lodhi, Jack Crossley, Olivia Fitton and Kiran Iqbal created some work about Rochdale in French for the topic of tourism. Some of the work produced was so good that it is now displayed at the tourist office at Touchstones.

The last Springhill High School World Book Day fancy dress organised by Mrs Taylor our Librarian, recently took place and it was decided that monies raised would be donated to help our community by donating the funds to Springhill Hospice. We are doing this in conjunction with a member of staff who is raising money by running in the SHINE 1/2 Marathon on Saturday 17 April 2010.

The day was a great success and we have raised £353.65 which will be presented to Sarah Ford from Springhill Hospice in the near future.

Our fancy dress winners were:

Pupils

  • Taslima Bibi 11G - Geisha
  • Aaron Royle 7S -Teen Wolf
  • Danielle Roberts 8P - Clown

Staff

  • Mr Sam Brook C Teacher of Science - Ladybird books
  • Carole Byson-Wood Drama Department Teaching Assistant - Goldilocks and the three bears (she was all of them!).

All winners have received their certificates and vouchers in assembly.

On Saturday 6 March a combined team of year 8 and 9 students took part in a National Magistrates court competition. All the students performed very well. The competition required the students to act a court scene where they played all of the key roles. Some of our students were judged to have performed the best in their category ie: Leon Hollinrake (Court Usher) and Aisha Khan (First Prosecution witness). Well done to all involved and Mr Walters would like to thank Mr McDonough who helped to prepare the students for the event.
