Celebration for Air Training Corps

Friends and family gathered at the Hopwood Unionist Club to celebrate the achievements of the 2301 Heywood Squadron Air Training Corps.
The presentation is an annual event to celebrating members of the squadron's accomplishments, including the Duke of Edinburgh Award, a BTEC in Aviation and sporting achievements.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale, Councillor Keith Swift and Ms Susan Etchells were there to show their support and present awards, which had been decided by the squadron officers, and included: best attendance, sports person of the year and best drummer.
Officer in Charge, Chris Seddon said: “The awards nice way to bring everybody together and celebrate their achievements over the past 12 months. This is their night and they have worked hard for it.”
Mayor Swift was delighted with the progress and achievements the cadets have made, he said: “I am thrilled to see so many people here to support these magnificent people.
“I am thrilled with all the community work that the cadets do and it makes Heywood a good place to be.
“Congratulations to everybody.”
Mayor Swift presented the following awards:
- Best attendance over the year: Cpl Ratcliffe
- Best trumpet player in the band: F/S Harvey
- Best bells players in the band: Cdt Humphreys
- Jackie Bowdler award for best drummer: Cpl Wroe
- First class exam trophy: Cdt Lucas
- Harold Haworth award for training leading and senior: Cdt Aspinall
- Best at drill and turn out: Cpl Chorlton
- Laurence Golding award for first aid: Cdt Linneker
- Bryan Husdon award for football: Cdt Roberts
- Radford award for shooting: Cpl Ratcliffe
- Sports person of the year: Cdt Kime & Cdt Lochery
- RAF and history of flying: F/SGT Harvey
- William Turner award for corps motto: Cdt Riley
- Best Female: Cdt Humphreys
- Best Male: Cdt Roberts
Section Commander, Peter Bohanna said: “It is nice to see so many young people achieve something positive.
“The young people here take part in a lot of different activities. They have a support unit of their parents and the staff but it is all their hard work and effort that makes them achieve.”
2301 Heywood Squadron Air Training Corps is made up of people aged between 13 and 20 and takes part two nights a week.
