Police strengthen links in the community
Date published: 01 March 2010
Rochdale South Neighbourhood Policing Team has been meeting with members of the Milkstone and Deeplish community to listen to their concerns, introduce themselves and discuss solutions for crime in their area.
A total of 251 homes were visited between 16 and 19 February with 98 per cent of people saying that they were happy with the service provided by the local police.
Members of the priority ward team visited people’s homes to distribute leaflets with police contact details and used the mobile police station to increase interaction with the community.
Residents were also offered crime prevention and safety advice as well as information on how to join the Home Watch scheme and the importance of registering mobile phones and valuables on the Immobilise website.
Immobolise.com is a free national database available to the public that the police can access and compare against items that have been found or recovered from suspected criminals.
Sergeant Shoheb Chowdhury for Rochdale South Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “This initiative is just another part of Neighbourhood Policing, which aims to put officers at the heart of the communities they serve. It means police can respond to concerns at a local level and improve the quality of life for residents.
“Surveys were carried out during the operation and I am pleased to see that 98 per cent of those asked were happy with the service they receive from police. However, I am aware that anti-social behaviour and drugs are a concern and I will be looking to increase resources in areas affected by high levels of anti-social behaviour and drug misuse”
Ghulam Rasul Shahzad, Chairman of the BME Fire and Safety Education Association, said: “It was great to see the police really getting to know the local community. I know as a resident of the area that people are appreciative of the police’s commitment to reducing crime in Milkstone and Deeplish and I hope that such operations will make a real difference.”
