Car parking charges proposed at Smithy Bridge Station

Date published: 01 March 2010

Rail commuters from Smithy Bridge had a shock when they found flyers attached to their windscreens by the firm that runs the Smithy Bridge Station Car Park (DRS Car Parks) informing commuters the company is proposing to make a charge for car parking.

DRS Car Parks claims damage to the surface of the car park and problems for businesses further along the road as justification for the proposed charges.

However, it is understood that car parking alongside the railway is provided by GMPTE and cannot be subject to any charges. The land on the other side, along the canal is privately owned and parking has been permitted on an informal basis by the owners.

Pressure on the car parking spaces at Smithy Bridge has increased considerably since the Oldham, line closed, as no adequate alternatives were provided by GMPTE.

Richard S Greenwood, STORM Chairman, has asked GMPTE for a definitive statement as a matter of urgency.
