Truancy crackdown in Heywood

Date published: 23 February 2010

Police in Heywood are aiming to crackdown on truancy by informing the school and parents of children who are caught skipping lessons. Inspector Darrell Butterworth of Heywood’s Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We know that anti-social behaviour in the town centre is a problem at the moment and we’ve had reports that school children are causing a nuisance during the daytime when they’re supposed to be at school.

“Expect to see more police officers on patrol in the town centre during the week of action on the look out for these truants to make sure they face up to the consequences. We’ll be informing their parents and the schools about their behaviour so hopefully they won’t be tempted to do it again.”

Over 7 days, police and council enforcement officers will be part of operations designed to help catch criminals, deter crime and punish those who ignore the law.

The week of action that will take place 8-15 March 2010 will focus on tackling the issues pertinent to Heywood’s town centre.

There’ll also be lots of opportunities for local people to get helpful and practical advice on many issues such as; crime prevention, health and wellbeing including alcohol and drug misuse, victim support and much more. Safe plating schemes, where police officers will fit hard to remove screws to your car licence plate to help prevent it from being stolen, will also be taking place at Morrisons. Dates are still to be confirmed.
