Beech House School

It was a good end to the half term for Beech House sports teams.

The U11 football team took part in the FA Premier League Tournament at Ewood Park, Blackburn. This tournament included 28 schools from around the North West.

Beech House got their campaign off to a frustrating start against St Paul’s, losing 2-0. The boys failed to show their quality in this match but bounced back suitably with a 4-0 victory over Burscough. Jacob Hill showed his finishing qualities in this match to bag a couple for his tournament tally. However, the star of the match was undoubtedly goalkeeper Subhan Mahmood who made a string of fine saves to earn a clean sheet for the team. Beech House were brought back down to earth in the next game, being beaten 2-0 by Ryeland’s School. Ryeland dominated the midfield and took their chances well.

Once more, Beech House bounced back, earning a hard fought draw against St George’s thanks to a lovely taken goal by James Hart, and a wonderful display in a 5-2 victory over Clayton Brook. Jacob Hill once again filling his boots with an excellent hat-trick. The final game saw Beech House score their third win of the tournament, beating St Peter’s 3-1. Jacob Hill finished the tournament with 9 goals, James Hart with 2, Conor Leyland with 2 and Jacob Dench with 1. It was an excellent showing from the whole team, earning themselves the position of 7th overall. It was an excellent experience for the whole squad, well done!

They then travelled to Grimsby for the Independent Schools North of England Tournament. They managed to book themselves a place at the National 5-aside Soccer Championships with an impressive display.

Beech House were placed in a strong group, but got off to a solid start with a 1-0 victory against St Martin’s, thanks to a cool finish by Jacob Hill. Beech House dominated the match throughout and should have scored many more. However, they were brought down to earth with a crash in their next game with their only defeat of the group stage, losing 4-0 to a strong looking Argyle House team.

Beech House failed to get their passing working and sloppy mistakes cost them this game. The boys then bounced back well with a solid 2-0 win over Prenton Prep from the Wirral, once again thanks to two goals from Jacob Hill. The team gained great confidence from this win and turned on the style against the hosts, St James of Grimsby, running out 3-0 winners. Jacob Dench and James Hart were on the score sheet. These results meant Beech House qualified for the semi-finals.

Beech House were drawn against Hull Collegiate. This was a very tough and physical game that included the goal of the tournament, a 15 yard, top corner screamer from Jacob Hill. Despite this, Beech House unluckily lost 4-1, not a fair reflection of the game. This result meant that Beech House had to beat Firwood Manor in the 3rd/4th play off in order to win a medal. This local derby between Rochdale and Oldham was an excellent football match with many chances for both teams, but thanks to the classy finishing of Jacob Hill, Beech House won 2-0. This brought his total to 7 for the tournament.

The result also meant that Beech House had qualified for the National Finals to represent the North of England. The five boys played out of their skins during this tournament. The team was George Preston, Luke Shaw, Jacob Dench, James Hart and Jacob Hill. Despite Jacob Hill maintaining his awesome form, the man of the tournament was Luke Shaw because of his tireless defending and attacking. Good luck to the lads for the National Finals.

An under 14’s and under 16’s team travelled to Ormskirk to take part in the North of England Cross Country Championships. In the under 14 girl’s, Rebecca Whittaker finished in a creditable 25th place, whilst Jackson Cowie gained a bronze medal in the under16 boys event. Jackson will now travel to Rugby to take part in the National Cross Country Championships. An under 11 and under 12 team travelled to Cheadle to take part in the North of England Cross Country Championship. Despite the wintry weather conditions the team performed well, with Aston Buckley best placed in the under 12’s.

The highlight of the term was when the under 9’s gymnastics team travelled to Stoke-on-Trent recently to take part in the Independent Schools National Gymnastics Competition. This was the first time that the school had entered the competition and the pupils were understandably nervous. However, once the first routines got under way their nerves disappeared and they began to enjoy the day. Both under 9 teams finished 4th in each of the boys and girls competitions. This was a credit to all the competitiors. Best placed individual result were Harry Hamilton (11th) and Daisi Daniels (14th). The school received an award for taking part in the event and they were also given endeavour awards to be given out to pupils in their gymnastics classes.

The under 14 boys football played their final game in the small schools league against Waterloo Lodge. Playing some excellent football the team proved too strong for their opponents gaining a comfortable 14-2 victory. Goal scorers were Ryan Matthews (3), Jacob Wright (4), Aqib Ahemd (4), Harrison Groome, Bilal Hafeez and Danial Tahir.

The Year 9 and 10 art students went to visit the museum of Science & Industry and the Whitworth art gallery, as part of their GCSE exploring the works of other artists.
We mainly focussed on the inspirational exhibition Da Vinci, the Genius. This exhibition celebrates the work and life of one of the most inspirational Renaissance masters, Leonardo Da Vinci, as well as the other exhibitions.

Whilst at the Whitworth, we viewed a new series of exhibitions such as: The Walls are Talking, Arts and Culture and Deep Rooted. Overall the visit proved to be very successful since all the students seemed to be fully engaged and enjoyed themselves at both locations, making plenty of notes for their Artist reviews for their unit work.

Monday 1 March will be Year 6 and Year 10 Parents Evening. Parents should have received their time slots.

Pupil of the Week:
Nursery Samantha Balalong
Reception Raees Smedley
Year 1 Maldini Simic
Year 2 Milly Cooper
Year 4 Talha Mazhar
