Rochdale Civic Society Awards 2006
Date published: 24 October 2006
The ever-popular, annual Rochdale Civic Society Awards Evening took place on Monday 23 October. The event, held at Rochdale Town Hall, rewards local contributions to the improvement of buildings and the general environment of Rochdale.
The Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Jean Hornby, and MP Paul Rowen were both in attendance. The Mayor welcomed people to the event and thanked the Civic Society for their contribution to the town's heritage. She said: "I’m delighted to be here this evening to present the Civic Society Awards. Firstly, I would like to say a huge thank you to the Civic Society for your contribution to the town’s heritage – with a special mention for the heritage weekend, this is organised each year by the Society. What a tremendous achievement this year, with thirty venues being open to the public. This is by the way a record – and gives Rochdale more venues than any other place in the country!
Chairwoman, Dorothy Greaves, commented on the achievements of the Civic Society in her speech and made special mention of the successes of the heritage weekend: "This year we had a record thirty venues open, including six new ones. Visitor numbers were extremely good, the new venues did well:
- "Clegg Hall was inundated with people, instead of the 40 who had booked on the two tours more than 100 turned up, and Jason Stead, the owner, decided to keep open house and welcomed them all."
- "The Magistrates Court had 84 at their three 'Mock Trials'."
- "The Salvation Army did well."
- "The paintings and photograph exhibition at Hollingworth Lake was also popular."
- The two churches of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints in Rochdale and Middleton are always extremely busy on these Heritage Days."
- "Saint Chad’s had some 80 visitors and 75 on the three tours of the monuments in the church yard.
"It was good news for most of the venues."
"Grateful thanks go to Rochdale Online who always back us on these occasions.
"Thanks must also go to the award winners this evening, for their contribution to the enhancement of this town of Rochdale."
Civic Society Awards
- Hallmark Developments
Awarded for the sensitive way in which the apartments have been established and the use of stone walls and garden layout. It is good to see such constructions in Rochdale.
Presented to Christopher Grieves.
- Miller Homes
Awarded for the design and its siting. As with Meadowcroft Lane the grounds have been tastefully designed to enhance the apartments. Again it’s good to have apartments available that are not only pleasing to the eye but much sought after.
Presented to Andrew Horridge and Fred Swinburne.
- HSBC Bank
Being a client of HSBC Bank Rochdale (any discount!) I was awestruck by the stained glass ceiling which had been covered up for so many years. Not only that, but the interior is a pleasure to enter, being spacious and airy. Modern Banking techniques are also evident with help on hand. You really need to go inside and view the changes especially the ceiling.
Presented to Steve Capon, Shaun Smith (Simons Construction), David Armstrong (Project Manager) amp; Ian Hunt (Fouin amp; Bell).
- Redbrook House
Stephen amp; Mark Taylor have achieved what must have seemed an almost impossible task of converting what was a public house which had been gutted by fire. Rochdale Online uses the ground floor and must be more than happy with the facilities they have inherited. Upstairs two apartments have been created and the striking part of this is the exposure of the beam ceiling adding to an already warm interior.
Presented to Stephen Taylor.
