A 30-year-old man who was caught driving round Rochdale with a gun has been jailed for six years, today, Monday 22 February 2010.

Gary Lee Edgar (born 21/03/79), of Middleton Road, Rochdale, was convicted at Bolton Crown Court at an earlier hearing of possessing a firearm, ammunition and a bladed article.

Edgar was arrested on 6 June 2008 as he drove his Audi A4 along Rooley Moor Road, Rochdale.

When officers checked his details, it became clear Edgar had been circulated as wanted for an unrelated matter, so he was arrested.

His car was searched and a bag under the passenger seat contained a revolver and ammunition.

Detective Constable Ryan Grumbridge, of Rochdale CID, said: "It is very concerning that Edgar was prepared to drive around the town with a lethal weapon.

"Fortunately, officers arrested him immediately, ensuring another gun has been taken out of circulation.

"Greater Manchester Police is committed to removing dangerous weapons and the people who supply and carry them from the streets and we will continue our aim to make Greater Manchester safer."
