Building fire at Birch Hill
Date published: 17 February 2008
Three fire engines and approximately fifteen firefighters from Rochdale and Littleborough attended a derelict building fire at around 6.30pm on Friday 15 February at Birch Hill Hospital, Union Road, Rochdale.
The fire involved a single storey derelict unit 30m x 15m and the fire service used an aerial appliance and three low pressure hoselines to bring the fire under control. A fire engine remained at the scene damping down overnight.
The fire follows concern about the effects of vandalism at the Birch Hill Hospital site. Flags, lead and roofing tiles have been stolen which is leading to a deterioration of the building and surrounding grounds and encouraging wanton destruction as the place takes on an air of neglect.
Local Councillor Jean Ashworth said: "There is a lot of vandalism going on and Pennine Acute and Persimmon Homes really need to step up their security measures."
The fire is believed to have been started deliberately.
