Community order for benefits cheat

Date published: 02 February 2010

Asebbe Leikun Birhanu, 39, of Vaynor, Lower Falinge Rochdale was given a 12-month community order to do 60 hours of unpaid work and ordered to pay £100 towards costs after pleading guilty to four charges of dishonestly failing to notify the council and Department for Work and Pensions about two periods of employment while he was claiming benefits.

Birhanu, who was claiming housing benefit, council tax benefit and Jobseekers’ Allowance, fraudulently claimed total of £1163.98 in benefits from the council and £1309.58 in JSA while working full time for an employment agency.

A council spokesman said: “We take benefit fraud very seriously and will always investigate cases reported to us.”
