Clone Roses at Studds
Date published: 31 January 2010
Eighties 'Madchester', indie bands aplenty but one stood out as different, deliberately, diffidently, not quite with 'the scene', The Stone Roses.
Looking back across the decades their music has that rare feel of being timeless and their 'sound' still evokes unstinting passion in a small army of fans.
Saturday night, 30 January 2010, Studds Bar, Rochdale Football Club - the latest Carling Music sponsored gig venue.
The line up:
- The Clone Roses - Gav Scott (Vocals), Tony Scott (Guitar), Mike Bagshaw (Bass), Phil Bennett (Drums).
- The Urchins - two guys from Lincoln.
- Mancunian DJ Dave Sweetmore.
The venue, underneath one of the football club's stands, lends itself surprisingly well as a gig venue but with only three staff on the bar, queues five deep, fifteen minutes to get served needs sorting.
First up was The Urchins, whose debut EP, consisting of two tracks with Spoek (of Djedjotronic's Boys Noize EP) comes out this month, followed by a session with DJ Dave Sweetmore before the headliners took the stage.
Clarity of sound was sacrificed for tinnitus inducing decibels, not that it mattered much to the frenzied legions of Roses followers lapping up all the Roses classics and revelling in the authenticity of a band many say is the finest Stone Roses tribute band - lead singer Gavin Scott's voice has been described as "uncannily" like the real thing and for once that's not just hype.
Next up at Studds are the Stereotonics (no explanation should be needed!) on Saturday 13 March.
