Better Late Than Never

Date published: 26 January 2010

The end of January is fast approaching but it’s not too late to make a New Year’s resolution.

That’s the message to all Greater Manchester people from their Police Authority which is urging communities to resolve to get involved in policing in 2010.

Greater Manchester Police Authority (GMPA) works on behalf of all communities in the City Region to ensure Greater Manchester Police is doing a good job.

This involves holding the chief constable to account and setting policing priorities which reflect the needs of local people.

GMPA chairman Cllr Paul Murphy said: “GMPA is made up of local councillors and local independent members so we are representative of Greater Manchester communities.
“We work hard to stay in touch with what people feel and think about policing so we can make sure policing is being delivered in the right way.”

Both GMP and GMPA consult local people throughout the year to capture views about policing.

In addition, the Authority website (www.gmpa.gov.uk) has a “Having your Say” section which people can use 24/7 to submit their opinions.

Cllr Murphy said: “It is vital for us as a police authority to know what people think about policing and I’d encourage anyone who has views to make 2010 the year they take action.”

Examples of work driven by GMPA in response to public feedback include a call handling project which has helped deliver improvements for those who contact the Force by telephone.

And an off-road nuisance scheme helped police and partner agencies tackle the problem of off-road motorbikes and other nuisance vehicles more effectively.

In addition, the Authority works in partnership with the Force when annual policing priorities are set to ensure they match local needs.

Members of the public can get in touch with GMPA in all the usual ways – by post, phone, email or in person.

People can also attend GMPA committee meetings which are open to the public. Public questions are an item on the agenda of each meeting and questions can be submitted in writing up to a week before each committee meeting.

All committee meeting dates are published on the GMPA website along with meeting agendas and reports. Those who do not have internet access can contact the Authority by phone, writing or in person for the details.
