10th anniversary of the Friends of Hare Hill Park

Date published: 24 January 2010

The Friends of Hare Hill Park are celebrating their 10th anniversary.

To mark the occasion the ‘Friends’ joined together at Littleborough Cricket Club to celebrate all the hard work and effort that has gone in to restoring the park.

Their achievements over the past ten years include the restoration of the band stand, a facelift for the bowling greens, a play area for toddlers, the installation of CCTV cameras, more lighting, better parking and much more.

Chairman of the ‘Friends’ Malcolm McCormick said: “I would like to thank all the members of the group for all their support throughout the years.”

The Friends of Hare Hill Park was founded ten years ago by Jill Roberts - who passed away last year. Mr McCormick said: “Jill used to walk through the park and was disgusted at the vandalism and neglect she saw so she decided to form a friends group. Even in the last few months of her illness she had a great interest in what the group was doing and it is a great legacy she has left behind for future generations to use and enjoy.”

The Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale were amongst the guests at the party, Mayor Swift said: “It is fantastic to see the developments over the last ten years by the friends group who have worked in partnership with the township office and the park ranger.

“It is nice to see so many people here celebrating the success and enjoying the Littleborough Brass Band performing, as they have been in the re-furbished bandstand throughout the year.”

Chairwoman of the Pennine Township, Councillor Jean Ashworth, said: “I am proud of all the achievements the friends have made and for keeping going for ten years.

"They have carried out excellent work which is a benefit to the borough.

"I look forward to many more years of working with the friends.”
